Bono Minister urges youth to engage in commercial farming

Atronie (B/R)– Madam Justina Owusu-Banahene, the Bono Regional Minister, has cautioned unemployed youth against rural-urban migration and urged them to engage in commercial farming to better their lot.

Farming, she said, might seem difficult but remained a lucrative economic activity that they could engage in for enhanced socio-economic livelihoods.

She said rural-urban drift had caused many unsuspecting youth to get entangled in social vices and consequently ruined their future.

Madam Owusu-Banahene gave the advice when she presented nine rice harvester machines to three farmer groups at Atronie, a farming community in the Sunyani Municipality.

The beneficiaries are Success Women Rice Association, ‘Twere Nyame’ Women Rice Association, and ‘Amama Mma’ Rice Group.

She said government had prioritised agriculture and was doing everything possible to make the sector attractive to the youth.

Madam Owusu-Banahene advised farmers to unite and form cooperatives to obtain government support and entreated the beneficiaries to ensure proper maintenance of the machines.

Mr John Ofosu Denkyira, the Sunyani Municipal Director of Agriculture, assured of the Directorate’s commitment to assist farmers with the requisite technical knowledge to enable them to increase productivity.
