A total of 1,063 fresh postgraduate students of the School of Graduate Studies have been matriculated to mark their formal admission into the University of Professional Studies, Accra.
By going through the rites of Matriculation, which included affirming the Matriculation Oath and signing the matricula, the fresh students were officially welcomed into the University community as they attain full membership status.
Addressing the matriculants on Friday, November 19, the Vice-Chancellor of UPSA, Professor Abednego F. O. Amartey congratulated the fresh students on their successful admission and welcomed them into the university.
He noted that the choice of UPSA by these students was a firm endorsement of the University’s reputation as one of the most progressive universities on the continent and a trailblazer in the delivery of top-notch pedagogy in both professional and academic higher education.
“Your enrolment at UPSA is the clearest attestation that you believe in the value of a degree from UPSA and the quality of teaching and learning being offered here,” he said.
“You made the right choice for your graduate studies, as UPSA is highly reputed globally, representing the ultimate in scholarship, professionalism, excellence, credibility and high quality, all leading to inevitable success.
“I congratulate you all on your successful admission into this great institution. We are most grateful for your confidence in us.”
Admission Statistics
The Vice-Chancellor disclosed that the University received a total of 1,561 postgraduate applications for the 2021/2022 academic year, out of which 1,445 applicants were offered admission.
From this number, a total of 1,063 students enrolled and registered for the academic year, representing about 20 percent increase over the previous year’s intake.
The fresh students comprised 16 PhD students, 28 MPhil students, 659 MBA students, 321 Master of Art/Master of Science students and 39 MBA-Distance Learning students.
The new students are made up of 581 males and 482 females, bringing the male to female ratio of this year’s cohort of postgraduate fresh students to 55:45.
Charge to students
The Vice-Chancellor charged the students to be committed to their studies and be disciplined throughout their period of education while acting as good ambassadors of the University.
He urged them to particularly pay attention to the content of the UPSA Students’ Handbook which spells out the rules and regulations that govern the conduct of students.
He stressed that every aspect of the rules and regulations in the Handbook applied to all students of the University and they were binding on all, adding that as a listening Management team, they will ensure that the views and opinions of students were always incorporated into shaping decision-making and improving institutional effectiveness and efficiency as well as learners’ experiences.
Professor Amartey therefore advised the students to make maximum use of the resources and facilities placed at their disposal, reiterating that the university will equip them with an education that will challenge them to break new grounds when they are out of school.
On his part, the Chairman of the governing council of the University, Dr Kofi Ohene-Konadu urged the students to be focused in their pursuit of academic excellence, stressing that the road to academic success especially at the postgraduate level can be demanding.
“Your participation in this important event should ignite your preparedness to engage in the academic rigour that UPSA offers,” Dr Ohene-Konadu said. “I therefore urge you to pursue excellence in your academic work. You can achieve this by striking the right balance between academic work and other social and extra-curricular activities.
“In short, do not lose sight of your main purpose of coming to UPSA. Management of this University will, on its part, do what it can to make your studies here a very memorable experience by providing the resources and facilities necessary for your academic work,” he concluded.
Among those who matriculated on the day were the first batch of students for the newly introduced Master of Science in Procurement Management programme.
