UNFPA Officer: Resocialise boys to appreciate female counterparts

Sekondi, Dec. 10, GNA – Mr Faisal Bawa, the Programme Assistant at the UNPFA, has called for the reorientation of male children to appreciate their female counterparts to create a balanced society.

“Let empower the boys with positive knowledge on girls; the need for them to accept and support them as a sister, friend, mother or wives and above all, see them as an equal image in the sight of the creator…Men should begin playing a more responsible role,” Mr Bawa said.

Mr Bawa was speaking during a carnival and durbar in the Western Region to mark 16 days of Activism in the Region organised by the Department of Children on the theme: “End Violence Against Women Now.”

Some placards read “No to child marriage,” “Enough is Enough,” “Help and Restoration”.

The women stressed the need for societies to stand up to be voices for the marginalized and abused persons, including boys in some cases.

The 16 Days of Activism raises awareness on the fact that women around the world continue to suffer rape, domestic violence and the need for men to begin treating women who are their mothers, sisters and wives with love, appreciation and utmost dignity.

The UNFPA Programme Assistant also encouraged fathers to show passion to their girl-child, respect them and help develop their emotional intelligence to detect early warning signs of abuse.

“We should help them understand their make-up early in life to avoid these abuses,” he said.

Ms Maribel Okine, the Western Regional Director of the Department of Children, said Ghana ratified conventions that sought to protect its citizenry from abuses and violence and that stakeholders must work hand in hand to achieve the tenets of the convention.

The country, she added, had taken various steps through the creation of the Ministry, operationalization of the Orange Support Centre and the Boame App to curb and address the incidence of gender-based violence.

In the Region, the capacities of women groups have been enhanced through training on essential services.

The training had also led to the creation of formidable teams, strengthen coordination to effectively and efficiently address gender-based violence.

Ms Okine said, “Violence against women pain too deep for tears…we should intensify our activism even after these 16 days celebration to achieve more for the country.”
