Tamale,- Travellers at bus stations in Tamale, people at hospitals and guests in hotels and guest houses, in the metropolis formed part of the first group of people to be counted as part of the Population and Housing Census (PHC), which began midnight June 28).

A team of enumerators led by the Northern Regional Minister, Regional Coordinating Director and Northern Regional Statistician visited such places after midnight to count the people.

Mr Mohammed Yakubu, who was travelling from Tamale to Kumasi, responded to questions from the Census Official to ensure that his details were properly captured.

He told the Ghana News Agency after being counted that the exercise was useful but the questions were too lengthy, which prolonged the counting process.

Madam Asana Alhassan, who was also counted at the Savelugu bus station in Tamale, was happy that she was counted but said some of the questions demanded answers that she considered being private.

A total of 4,476 enumerators, 5,392 field staff, 4,236 enumeration assistants, 916 supervisors, 39 district field supervisors and 17 District Census officers have been deployed across the Northern Region for the ongoing PHC.

Mr George Agbenyo, Northern Regional Statistician, described the counting process as smooth, saying no challenges were experienced during the exercise.

Mr Agbenyo urged everyone to avail themselves of the exercise and give actual information about themselves to the enumerators to ensure credible data for national planning and development.
