Tijjaniya Movement: Inter-religious tolerance key for peace

Tema,-The Tijjaniya Muslims Movement of Ghana (TMMG) has reiterated that inter-religious tolerance calls for the cooperation of all members of the society in the cause of goodness and is for strengthening national peace and stability.

Alhaji Khuzaima Mohammed Osman, Executive Secretary of the movement told the Ghana News Agency in Tema in an interview that “Ghana is a country with the diverse culture, which makes the nation as one of the pluralist country in the world hence people with different faith should try to tolerate and accept each other in peace and unity”.

According to Alhaji Osman, the Holy Qur’an teaches the Muslim that there is no compulsory religion, and therefore each individual person should be given the freedom to exercise his or her religion.

Alhaji Osman, a member of the Greater Accra Peace Council said when Prophet Mohammed migrated to Madina, he found that there was a large Jewish community in the city, but did not contemplate forcing them into the fold of Islam.

“The prophet entered into a peace agreement with them and called them alhlul- Kitabi which means the people of scriptures,” he said.

He emphasized that such examples of tolerance by the prophet to the Jewish should be practised by the Muslim followers.

He stressed that for centuries, people of all religious faiths have been living together in peace and harmony, which we must safeguard to benefit the generations yet unborn.
