Tax profit of digital businesses, not those who buy from them and pay digitally — Sam George tells ‘lazy’ government

Member of Parliament for Ningo Prampram, Sam Nettey George has advised government to find a creative way of taxing the profits of businesses operating online.

He said taxing people who sell their wares online is more creative and tolerant than charging those who go online to buy and pay digitally.

The NDC firebrand comment follows the proposed introduction of the 1.7% levy on digital financial transactions including Mobile Money.

The MP said the Nana Akufo Addo government has chosen what he describes as the “lazy approach” by taxing persons who patronize online businesses when it should be the other way round.

Hon George who was speaking to Israel Laryea on Joy News AM show noted that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has been exposed as a government whose policy directions do not match its rhetoric.

“You are charging someone on the profits they are making from their digital business, that’s what a creative government would do. A lazy government will actually go and attack the people who are supposed to go and buy, so right now your digital business is going to collapse because I’m no longer going to do business and pay you online, and then ask you to do delivery and pay for that online, so am collapsing a digital economy.

“You listened to Dr. Bawumia in 2019 saying they cannot tax Momo, if we tax Momo, it is wicked because we are going to be dealing with the poor people. Look, when you look at the statistics that say 30- 40 percent of Ghanaians do less than a GH100 cedis in a day, again it’s very misleading,” he stressed.

The Ningo Prampram MP has been heard severally after the reading of the budget showing his disapproval with some sections especially the proposal of the E-Levy.

He said even though he had advised some NPP MPs in private conversations on the proposed levy, he will vote against the 2022 budget when it’s presented to the House for approval.
