Some football fans commend GFA for sacking Coach Akonnor

Accra,- Some football fans in Accra have applauded the Ghana Football Association (GFA) for the termination of the contract of the Head Coach of the senior national team, the Black Stars, Charles Kwablan Akonnor.

In an interview with the GNA Sports, they described the decision as perfect, saying the team was losing its potency and shine on the continent under Coach Akonnor.

Mr. Fred Agbeko a Mechanic at Osu said football was used to project the nation globally and the gradual decline of the team was worrying hence the need for the GFA to sack the coach.

He said the winning mentality was not there and the quality of the team was fading each day.

“In 2006 we didn’t have that quality but the enthusiasm with which the boys approached their games made them who they are today. Stephen Appiah, Sulley Muntari, Michael Essen, Asamoah Gyau, and co, were on top of their games and made the nation proud,” he added.

He said the players need a coach who can motivate them to get back to the winning ways adding that Coach Akonnor had some good performance but they were not enough.

Mr. Kojo Owusu, a trotro driver at Madina said the former coach had difficulties with player selection, and this was evident in their game against Ethiopia.

“The game against South Africa was terrible because South Africa could have scored Ghana more than three goals. We did not get a single shot at goal,” he said.

He said Ghana missed the last World Cup and they were not in the mood to miss Qatar 2022, hence the need to make early changes to avoid that.

Mr. Owusu suggested the appointment of a foreign coach, since they would be more independent and cannot be influenced when it comes to player selection.

Mr. Joel Sackey said it was the best decision especially at this crucial time.
