Akatsi (VR),- Some Driver Unions in the Akatsi South Municipality have vowed to continue their operations despite an indefinite nationwide strike declared by the Coalition of Commercial Transport Operators.
A visit by the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on Monday morning to the various lorry stations within the Akatsi Township saw some vehicles loading passengers to their various destinations.
Mr Godwin Kwawukumey, a commercial driver and trustee of Gader Transport Union, Akatsi Branch, disclosed to the GNA their outfit was yet to receive any official directive from their leaders.
Mensah Kadzaku, the Akatsi-Dzodze Branch Chairman of Gader Transport Union, also said they would have joined the strike if a communiqué had reached them.
However, some Unions in the Municipality said they would comply with the directive.
Mr Stephen Gamado, hiring car Branch Chairman of the Progressive Transport Owners Association (PROTOA), Akatsi, told the GNA their members would not embark on any form of commercial activities as directed.
He said the high cost of transport operations in the country and called on the government to help solve the situation.
Mr Nutefe William Quarshie, a passenger, complained about the situation but expressed optimism government would come to the driver’s plight.
The strike, the GNA observed, is not hugely affecting the movement of passengers in the area.
The Coalition of Commercial Transport Operators had earlier directed all commercial transport operators to embark on a sit-down strike to back demands for the removal of some five taxes in the 2022 budget statement.
