Sections of the public want the constitution to be amended—Volta NCCE

Ho,– Mr Kenneth Kponor, Volta Regional Director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), has reported growing calls within the Region for a constitutional amendment.

He said during a series of radio engagements, which formed part of activities to mark the Constitution Week celebration in the Region, participants had expressed concerns over what they claimed was a loss of the functions of the nation’s prime document through violations and abuse.

The Director told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that members of the public who contributed via phone and SMS, cited among others, the violation of the constitution by people in authority and the selective application of the laws by the security agencies, particularly the police.

He said there was a widespread perception that the Constitution did not function in the interest of the citizenry and that references were made to how those in authority allegedly violated the laws and remained immune to punishments while the ordinary citizens were hounded for petty crimes.

The excessive concentration of power in the hands of the executive arm of Government and the lack of accountability on the part of the nation’s leaders was also brought up.

Mr Kponor said officers of the NCCE, who led the programmes in the various districts, endeared to reorient the public on the potency of the Constitution.

The activities also included quiz competitions dubbed “Know The Constitution”, during which listeners were awarded airtime and copies of the constitution for answering questions correctly.

The NCCE also made use of information centres across the Region during the celebrations and the Regional Director noted the growing interest in the constitution across the Region.

The NCCE on its part will mark this year’s annual constitution week celebration from April 28, a period set aside by the Commission to interact with the public on the 1992 Constitution.
