Ronaldinho too grief-stricken to attend his mother’s funeral in Brazil

Ronaldinho was reportedly too stricken with grief to attend his mother’s funeral after she died following complications arising from coronavirus.

The Barcelona and Brazil legend’s mother, Miguelina, went into hospital after contracting Covid-19 in December. The 71-year-old passed away on Saturday – but according to a report in Brazil, Ronaldinho was too upset to go to the funeral, which was attended by his brother, Roberto, and sister, Deisi.

Ronaldinho is yet to comment publicly on his mum’s passing but has blacked out his Instagram profile image since the news emerged.

Lionel Messi – who was Ronaldinho’s friend and protege when the Argentine was an emerging talent at Camp Nou – shared a heartfelt message of support via Instagram.

“Ronnie, I have no words. I can’t believe it,” said Messi. “Just sending you a lot of strength and a big hug for you and the whole family. I’m very sorry. Rest in peace.”

Brazil and PSG star Neymar has also shared his sympathies, messaging: “Stay strong Roni… I am very sorry.”

Ronaldinho is widely regarded as one of the best players of his generation and among the most talented footballers ever.

The 2005 Ballon d’Or winner claimed a World Cup in 2002 and the Champions League with Barcelona in 2006. He also played for Gremio, Paris Saint-Germain, AC Milan, Flamengo, Atletico Mineiro, Queretaro and Fluminense.

The 40-year-old first revealed that his mum had been taken to hospital with coronavirus just before Christmas of last year.

“Dear friends, my mother has Covid-19 and we are fighting so that she recovers soon,” Ronaldinho shared at the time.

“She is in intensive care, receiving the best possible treatment. I would like to thank everyone in advance for all of the positive energy you always send. With love.

“Stay strong Mum.”
Unfortunately, the Brazilian great has now lost his mother to the virus which has claimed the lives of millions worldwide.
