Road crashes in Upper East increase in 2021

Bolgatanga (U/E), – The Upper East Regional office of the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has recorded more deaths through road crashes this year.

It has, therefore, advised drivers to be cautious and passengers in both private and public transport to take their lives into their own hands to ensure they arrive alive.

“2021 has seen an increase in death rates as a result of road crashes, with 193 crashes recorded from January to November,” Mr Abdul Bawah Ghamsah, the Head of Upper East Regional Road Safety Commission, said.

The number involved 318 vehicles, 81 deaths, 25 pedestrian knockdowns, and 224 persons sustaining injuries.

Last year the Authority recorded 15 cases of pedestrian knockdowns, 11 deaths and 251 injuries and on election-related road incidences in December, two accidents were recorded with one death, Mr Ghamsah told the Ghana News Agency in an interview.

He urged road users to look for designated crossing points before doing so and drivers should avoid drunk driving.

The interview was based on the Authority’s preparations towards ensuring sanity on the roads as the yuletide approaches.

“It’s not everywhere a policeman will be to caution a driver and warn him not to do the wrong thing,” Mr Ghamsah said, and called on passengers to be vigilant to assist drivers to get to their destinations safely.

He said the NRSC would embark on more road safety campaigns and activities to educate the public on safe road usage, especially during festive periods, to reduce crashes and deaths.

A number of public fora had been held in Navrongo and Bolgatanga but due to the current situation at Bawku, the campaign there had been put on hold, Mr Ghamsah said.

He said though the road safety taskforces were up to the task, the Authority, in collaboration with the Ghana Police Service, would complement their efforts in Bolgatanga, Navrongo, Bawku, and Paga through community outreaches and sensitisation to carry the message across.

A special launch of ‘Stay Alive’ campaign would be held and activities would roll into next year to sustain efforts to reduce road accidents, Mr Ghamsah, said.

The Ghana Education Service would be part of the forum to enhance education and sensitisation.
