Tema,– Tema Regional Police Command has asked the public to provide information about criminals and their activities to the police to aid them in crime prevention, detection, apprehension, and prosecution of offenders.
Community members serve as the eye, ear, and nose of the police because they lived with the criminals and must therefore assist the police to combat crime; Superintendent Kwabena Otuo Acheampong, Regional Crime Officer, Tema Regional Police Command of the Ghana Police has noted.
He also noted that stakeholders such as business and corporate bodies, media, Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies, National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), and the Judiciary must collaborate with police for crime prevention.
Supt. Acheampong stated at the eighth: “End of Month Stakeholder Engagement and Workers Appreciation Day,” seminar organized by the Ghana News Agency Tema Regional Office which is a platform rolled out for state and non-state actors to address national issues.
The event also served as a motivational mechanism to recognize the editorial contribution of reporters towards national development.
Speaking on: “The state of security within the Tema Region: Role of stakeholders,” Supt. Acheampong stressed the need for building partnerships between the Police and the Public to effectively combat crime in society.
He, therefore, asked business and corporate bodies to direct an appreciable amount of their corporate social responsibilities to support training programmes for the police.
He also appealed to the media set aside airtime and space for discussions on security issues on regular basis free of charge, and Commended the Tema Regional Office of the Ghana News Agency for creating a platform for the exchange of security ideas.”
He urged the NCCE to intensify public education on the laws, the various offences that are punishable by law, as well as duties and obligations as patriotic citizens and their rights as enshrined in the 1992 Constitution.
In the interest of justice, Rule of Law, Accountability, and public interest, the courts must also expedite action on cases before them as “justice delayed is justice denied.”
Mr Francis Ameyibor, Tema Regional Manager of Ghana News Agency advised media practitioners to be proactive in newsroom management for a post-COVID-19 era.
He said the media landscape is going through rapid transformation, the old system of institution organizing face-to-face seat-in events at a big conference hall is fading out, saying “from now onwards don’t expect more invitations to seat-in events, newsroom managers must adopt new means for news gathering and dissemination”.
Mr Ameyibor said, “due to the Coronavirus most companies, state and non-state institutions that used to organize conferences, meetings, seminars and invite journalists to cover were rapidly resorting to the use of Zoom, Skype and other web-based platforms for meetings.
“Now web-based meetings have come to stay and the old system of organising a big conference is dead and gone, media practitioners should not be looking for event focus assignment again,” he said.
