Public cautioned against consumption of unwholesome products during Christmas

Takoradi,- Madam Adjoa Fordjour, a Regulatory Officer at the Western Regional Office of the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has cautioned the general public to be wary of what they consume during the yuletide.

“We advise consumers to be on the lookout for cheap products on the market especially, those with a low-price reduction. Such products normally come with short expiry dates which when consumed can affect a person’s health”, she said.

Madam Fordjour gave the caution in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) and implored shoppers to be extra careful when shopping as some of the products on the shelves of shops might be contaminated.

She urged individuals to examine the wholesomeness of products, especially bottled, paper, and canned products, which sometimes had dents, rusts, leakages, and blotted lids.

Such products, she said, were often “unhealthy for consumption” and should not be purchased under any circumstance.

Also, she advised that fruits and vegetables should be carefully washed before using them as they might contain organisms that could not be seen with the human eye.

Madam Fordjour also encouraged people to prepare their foods under hygienic conditions saying, “if you create an unhygienic environment, you only invite insects to your homes”.

She said the FDA as part of its Christmas education and awareness programme, launched the “Safe Food, Our Collective Responsibility” campaign to educate the public ahead of the festive season.

The idea, she said, was to protect consumers from buying contaminated products that would have an adverse effect on their health.
