No financial benefit from friendlies against Japan, South Korea – Black Meteors Chairman

The Management Committee Chairman for Ghana’s U-23 side, the Black Meteors, Frederick Acheampong has said Ghana will not receive any financial benefit in the two international friendlies against Japan and South Korea.

The national U-23 side played Japan in a separate friendly in Tokyo on Saturday and on Tuesday.

The Black Meteors team suffered 10-0 on aggregate after the two legs.

The team has come under serious backlash after that humiliating defeat against the host of the 2020 Olympic Games.

The team have left Tokyo for South Korea on Wednesday morning.

According to Frederick Acheampong, the motive behind the friendly is to build a team capable of winning a medal at the 2023 African Games and future Olympic tournaments.

The GFA Executive Committee member said despite the embarrassing defeat suffered by the team, the friendly games come at no cost to the Ghana Football Association.

“We are not getting any money from this friendly. They are paying for all our expenses and the cost around the match. The players too are getting the exposure and experience. It’s not all the friendly matches that we get money”, he told Accra based Happy FM.

Acheampong admitted that the Black Meteors lost to a better side.

“To be honest the performance today was an improvement than last Saturday’s. The bottom line is that the Japanese team is better than ours. We lost to a better side with a lot of quality. They had prepared very well because of the Olympics Games. They started building the team in 2018 and it’s the same team till now. They play very good football; we have to be honest. If you compare it to our side, we had a short time to prepare”.

The Black Meteors will play two friendly games against South Korea.
