NDC opposing E-Levy because it will cause their defeat in 2024 elections — Simon Osei-Mensah

The Ashanti Region Minister, Simon Osei-Mensah says the National Democratic Congress (NDC) continues to oppose the Electronic Transaction Levy (E-Levy) because it is aware the benefits will keep them in opposition after the next general election.

Speaking to Akoma FM in an interview, the veteran politician noted that when passed, the E-Levy will enable the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) government to turn around the fortunes of the Ghanaian economy in no time.

He said with the NDC being aware, the party is scared and hence the stiff opposition against the E-Levy to ensure it does not keep the party in opposition after the 2024 general elections.

“The NDC knows that when the e-levy is finally passed, we will be able to turn the economy around within a short possible time, a situation that will put the opposition in a very disadvantaged position which will make them lose the 2024 elections,” Simon Osei-Mensah alluded.

The Electronic Transaction Levy has been in Parliament since November 2021 when the Minister for Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta tabled before the house during his presentation of the 2022 Budget Statement and Economic Policy proposal of the government.

Unfortunately for the government, the Minority in Parliament have not been convinced about the need for the E-Levy.

It has always argued that the imposition of the additional tax will bring untold hardships to Ghanaians and hence it will not approve the levy.

As a result, although there have been debates in Parliament and the government has agreed to reduce the charge from 1.75% to 1.50%, the Minority has insisted that the levy should be scrapped.
