Accra, Dec.10, GNA— MTN Ghana, a telecommunication giant, on Friday handed over a 24-unit classroom block to the Police Depot Basic School at Tesano, Accra.
The facility, estimated at GHC3.4 million, will provide education opportunities to about 2,500 pupils in Tesano and its environs.
The project forms part of the Company’s “Brightening Lives Agenda” and was completed within 18 months.
Mrs Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, Minister of Communications, who opened the classroom block officially, said education was a means through, which citizens could attain a bright future and said the classroom block represented a vital investment into the future of the Ghanaian child.
The Minister urged the pupils to take their Information Communication Technology (ICT) studies seriously because it could provide them with the key to unlock future job opportunities.
Mrs Owusu-Ekuful said Government was committed to investing in education and that the Free Senior High School programme was one of such numerous investments.
She said plans were being made to establish Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) centres across the country and encouraged female students not to think of themselves as not mentally equipped to compete with their male counterparts in certain fields.
“There is nothing you cannot do if you put your mind to it. Believe it, dream it, pray about it, work hard at it, seek help along the way and you will achieve it,” she advised.
Commissioner of Police (COP) George Alex Mensah, Director-General, Technical, Ghana Police Service, said MTN Ghana’s gesture was worthy of emulation.
He said the Company had demonstrated that indeed they understood the ideals of shared responsibility.
The Director-General urged management of the School to practice strict maintenance culture to ensure its longevity.
Mr Selorm Adadevoh, Chief Executive Officer (CEO), MTN Ghana, said the previous school building was old, dilapidated and overcrowded, thereby hampering academic activity.
He said the new building would give the school a face-lift and provide a more comfortable environment for teaching and learning.
Mr Adadevoh said education was an enabler of many opportunities and capable of transforming the living conditions of any nation’s citizens.
He said MTN Ghana had a commitment to brighten the lives of people in the communities they operated in and that they would not relent on that obligation.
