Migration Coordination Platform holds maiden stakeholders’ meeting

Accra, – The Migration Coordination Platform (MCP) has held its maiden bi-annual meeting with a call on partners to coordinate activities to improve migration-related interventions .

The MCP is an initiative of the International Development Partners (DPs) and multilateral agencies in Ghana to improve coordination of migration interventions.

It was organised by the International Organisation on Migration (IOM) in collaboration with GIZ, European Union Delegation (EUD) in Ghana and the International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD)for participants drawn from DPs, MDAs, multilateral agencies to perceive overview of Government’s priorities in the area of migration.

Mr Bright Wireko Brobby, the Deputy Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, said in recent years, issues of labour migration has become very critical.

He said the Government had taken steps to address the issues and to leverage labour governance and labour migration in the country.

He noted that remittances from labour migrants to their families in origins such as Ghana, investments, the real estate development, the transfers and experiences, and the knowledge and expertise, contribute immensely to the nation building.

“However, these developmental impacts can be distracted and turned to negative effects, if strong governance systems are not instituted to effectively manage the system,” he added.

The Deputy Minister said implementation of National Migration Policy; awareness creation on irregular migration; ensuring secure and safe labour migration through state agencies were some of the efforts government has put in place to support the sector.

He, therefore, reiterated the Ministry’s commitment in ensuring the protection of the rights of migrant workers as guaranteed by the Labour Act at all times.

Ms Abibatou Wane-Fall, Chief of Mission, IOM Ghana (resident) Togo and Ghana, said the MCP was constituted by EUD and IOM to improve the coordination of international development partners and multilateral agencies working on migration related subjects in Ghana.

She said the collaboration was encouraging and expressed the hope that it would enhance the partnership to achieve its goals.

The meeting also discussed collaboration moving forward, including the financing of migration actions, human resources and operational matters aimed at improving the effectiveness of migration programming implementation in Ghana, among others.
