Accra,- Sakat Lariba, a 25-year old and University of Education student, William Amponsah excelled at the maiden Good Day Energy cross country race held on Sunday.
The 12-km race which began at the Brekusu-Ashesi University road and ended at the Peduase Lodge saw about 300 long-distance runners chasing for the ultimate prize.
In the end, it was Sakat and Amponsah who dominated the female and male category with a time of 47.47s and 38.40s respectively to emerge champions.
Amponsah, the 21-year old and Sakat who both won the 2021 Asante Akyem Marathon showed class again in their respective categories to beat all the competitors to walk away with the GH¢ 5,000 prize money.
He finished ahead of Koogo Attia who clocked 40.10s, and Atalar Samuel taking the third position with a time of 40.51. For their efforts, Attia and Awuni received GH¢ 3,000 and GH¢ 1,500 respectively, and products from Good Day Energy drinks.
In the Women’s category, Titi Rosina finished the race with 52.24s, whilst Sherifa Moro came third with a time of 53.05s.
The Ghana Armed Forces Team won the men’s team event with 18 points, ahead of Daakye Team from the Ashanti Region and High Moral Team from Ho came third whilst the Asante Team won the women’s division with 28 points followed by the Ghana Armed Forces and the Upper West Region.
Amponsah, told the media he had set sight on participating in next year’s Boston Marathon after missing out this year due to inadequate time.
He said the nature of the rough road was his only challenge but he focused to finish the race in grand style.
All the other participants were given a certificate of participation, and a carton of Good Day Energy Drink for their sweats.
