Identifying talents of youth key to curbing unemployment

Accra, – Mr David Douglas Tengey, Founder of David Douglas Leadership Forum (DDLF), a non-governmental organization on youth development, says identifying and developing the talents of young people is a key step to addressing unemployment in the country.

He said youth employment should not just be about providing jobs for young people, but also developing their talents and skills so they could create employment for themselves.

Mr Tengey made the remarks at the signing of a partnership between his organisation and VJ Alston Coaching and Consulting, a US-based mentorship organisation.

The partnership between DDLF and VJ Alston Coaching and Consulting seeks to identify and develop the talents and potentials of the youth in the country through mentoring and coaching.

Mr David Douglas Tengey said they hoped to unearth the talents and potentials of the youth through a ‘Talent Identification Programme,’ an initiative to provide sustained empowerment for them.

“We will through the partnership and the Talent Identification Programme lead youth empowerment initiatives through coaching, mentoring, and training. This partnership will play a key role in adding value to the youth,” he added.

He said it was important for the competencies and skills of young people to be developed and enhanced so that they could create employment for themselves.

Dr Venner Joyce Alston, President, VJ Alston Coaching and Consulting, said they were committed to empowering Ghanaian and African youth in identifying and developing their skills.

She said parents, teachers, and other stakeholders needed to help young people identify what their potentials were and guide them to develop them.

“We have to provide opportunities for our youth as well as mentor and coach them to develop their full potentials for national growth and development,” she added.

Dr Alston said the country needed to inculcate in young people the skill of creating employment for themselves and others.
