Accra,– Prosper K. Kuorsoh, an Editor with the Upper West Regional office of the Ghana News Agency (GNA) has picked up the first runner up award for Disability Reporting in Ghana, offered by the YALI TV-Media Capacity Building Initiative on Disability Reporting (MCBIRD).

The overall Best Journalist Reporting on Disability award went to Portia Sonia Gabor of TV3, whereas Daniel Abugre Anyorigya of Citi News emerged Second Runner Up.

Also, the Best Journalists Living with Disability award went to Paul Anomah Kordieh of ETV Ghana.

They were selected among 26 fellows who had distinguished themselves in Disability Reporting in Ghana in 2021.

All 26 of them were presented with citations, while the award winners additionally received cash prizes and some scholarship packages.

Jerry Azanduna, a Chief Reporter with the Ghana News Agency based in the Bono East Region, is among the 26.

The award ceremony, held over the weekend, was preceded by a two-day workshop at GIMPA, Greenhill, under the auspices of the Media Capacity Building Initiative for Reporting on Disability (MCBIRD) fellowship programme.

Madam Stephanie S. Sullivan, the United States Ambassador to Ghana hailed the MCBIRD fellowship programme, saying it would help promote overall professionalism and ethics among journalists reporting on people with disabilities or any other marginalised community.

“If you, as members of the media don’t report on people with disability and other marginalised community, who will, and how will Ghanaians become aware and understand the challenges facing their neighbours?” she questioned.

Ambassador Sullivan, consequently, pledged her support towards the sustenance of the initiative.

Madam Fatimatu Abubakari, a Deputy Minister of Information, lauded the role of journalists in highlighting issues affecting the welfare of persons with disabilities, saying the government was committed to increasing its contribution to the disability fund.

Stephen Selasie Asuo, General Manager of YALI TV, commended all the fellows for pushing the disability agenda in Ghana.

MCBIRD is a YALI TV Initiative with support from the US Embassy, the National Centre for Disability Journalism, and the Ghana Journalists Association, among others.
