Ho, Feb. 13, GNA- The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) has donated chocolates and other cocoa products to the Cured Lepers Village in Ho.

Mr Alexander Nketia, Volta Regional Director of the Authority, who presented the items said the gesture was to show love to the people as the country celebrates Chocolate Day.

He told Ghana News Agency (GNA) it was good to show love and care, especially to the disadvantaged in society and that the Village was selected for the gesture due to its challenges.

The donation is part of the national celebration and is to let our fathers and mothers here know that they are not forgotten, they are loved and appreciated, and they are part of society, he said.

The Director said Chocolate Day celebration aimed at boosting domestic tourism and promoting consumption of chocolate products in the country.

Mr Nketia said the focus of this year’s celebration was to get communities to participate in domestic tourism to generate more revenue to accelerate the growth of the economy.

He said the Authority was engaging in “domestic tourism evangelism,” visiting churches and mosques to draw attention of the populace to the many tour sites in the country and the need for them to visit them.

The Authority is taking steps to form tourism clubs among religious bodies in the country, he said and that the clubs would help sensitise the citizens on the importance of tourism to national development.

On the theme for the celebration: “Eat chocolate, stay healthy, grow Ghana” with a sub theme, “our health our wealth,” Mr Nketia said chocolate has a lot of health benefits and urged Ghanaians to continue to consume the products.

He said Volta Region was endowed with a lot of tourism potential and asked the residents to visit at least one or two sites every quarter of the year.

Mr Nketia urged people close to tourist sites to take selfies at the sites and post them on their various social media platforms to market these areas to the rest of the world.

This, he said, would boost tourism at the local level and help develop the local economy.

Mr Nelson Attito, Caretaker of the Village, was grateful to the Authority for the gesture and asked other organisations to emulate the GTA and help them in similar ways.
