Ghana is not protected from violent extremism – NCCE

Sandema (U/E),- Mr Jeffery Adda, the Builsa North Municipal Director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has called for vigilance to check activities of violent extremists.

The Director said even though Ghana had enjoyed sustained peace over the decades, the country was not immune to the menace of violent extremists’ activities, especially if the unemployment situation in the country was not addressed.

“This is because the unemployed youth are highly susceptible to be recruited to perpetrate acts of violence while political actors are perceived to be the main sponsors of violent extremism,” he said.

Mr Adda was addressing stakeholders on “Preventing Electoral Violence and Providing Security to the Northern Border Regions of Ghana (NORPREVSEC)” Project at an Inter-Party Dialogue Committee (IPDC) meeting on violent extremism in Sandema, Builsa North Municipal, Upper East Region.

The NORPREVSEC project, supported by the European Union (EU), focuses on border Regions, hotspot communities and some coastal areas in the country.

Notwithstanding the strong institutional collaboration that existed to fight the menace of violent extremism in the country, the NCCE Director noted that there were operational weaknesses, which could be exploited by extremist groups.

Mr Adda said violent extremism had become a global threat, and called for intense preparations to combat threats of violent extremists, insisting that “As Ghanaians, we have to be wary of the activities of violent extremists’ activities in our neighbouring countries and take personal steps to safeguard the security of our communities.”

He said extremists’ activities in neighbouring countries threatened the peace and stability of the country, and it was therefore imperative for all Ghanaians to be concerned to contribute to preserve the country.

“I equally appeal to the traditional leaders to also employ local mechanisms of maintaining peace and peaceful co-existence between and among communities and ethnic groups,” the NCCE Director said.

Madam Vida Akantagriwen Anaab, the Builsa North Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) in an address delivered on her behalf, said peace was important and should not be taken for granted in the Municipality.

She noted that the people of Buluk had lived peacefully over the decades and were not interested in violent activities which she said retarded the progress and development of societies, “We are one, political parties came and met us as one Buluk people, so let’s continue to live peacefully and be vigilant as we go about our daily activities.”

The Municipal Police Commander, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Francis Kwasi Amankwah, called on Landlords to be mindful of the people they rented their rooms or houses to, as they might be renting their property to terrorists.

“All must be observant and report suspicious characters to the Police and give accurate information to the Police for investigations”.
