Fire guts two shops in Ho

Ho,- Fire gutted two shops, a furniture shop and a bookstore, in the Ho Municipality around 1330 hours on Sunday.

It took the intervention of the fire service to save adjoining shops, although one was partially damaged.

Mr Kafui Aveme, the owner of the furniture shop, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that he lost a living room furniture set worth about GHC 3,500 to the fire, which also destroyed tools and materials.

The cause of the fire is unknown and investigations by the fire department are ongoing.

An eyewitness, who was in her shop close to the burnt structure, said she was unaware of what started the fire but was only alerted when a hot gust from the flames reached her.

Assistant Chief Fire Officer, Joy Ameyibor Ayim, who led the team, however, told reporters that the shop had in stock highly inflammable materials and chemicals such as lacquers.

He said the possibility of an electrical fault would also be considered in the investigations.

He said the incident was the second the fire department had responded to within the day and urged the public to be keen on fire safety during the dry season.
