Sumbrungu (U/E),– The Bolgatanga Technical University in the Upper East Region is working hard to become a technological village and the preferred Technical University in Ghana and beyond, Professor Samuel Erasmus Alnaa, the Vice Chancellor of the University has said.
He said appropriate structures including the outdooring of a committee to develop a 10-year development plan for the University, introduction of new Masters Programme and building the capacity of relevant staff with preferred skills to offer quality tuition have been advanced.
He therefore called on the government to address the infrastructure deficit of the University to help position it strategically to achieve the set targets and produce results-oriented youth who would be self-employed to contribute their quota to development of the country.
Professor Alnaa said this when he addressed the 9th Congregation of the University which saw 324 students including 185 males and 139 females who completed their programmes in 2020 graduated with various honours.
Professor Alnaa disclosed that since the conversion of the institution into a Technical University, five new market-driven programmes such as Higher National Diploma in Banking and Finance, Automobile Engineering, Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Medical Laboratory Technology and Mechanical Engineering had been introduced.
“The University has also introduced a four-year degree and top-up programme (Bachelor of Technology) in most of its courses.
We are on course to introducing master degree programmes in technology soon. These programmes are expected to broaden our academic sphere and to enhance our current status and relevance in corporate -academia as well as consolidate our ambition to become a preferred tertiary institution and a technology village,” he said.
He said the University was also determined to increase enrollment in the next academic year and appealed to government to increase the infrastructure base of the university, particularly in the areas of lecture theatres and accommodation.
Professor Francis Abantanga, Chairman of the Governing Council of the University, said technical and vocational education and training was central in the educational system in Ghana and urged management of the University to train graduates with skills that would make them ready for the job market.
“I urge management and staff of Bolgatanga Technical University to continue to aspire to be the best and to take the issue of terminal degree which is the basic requirement for teaching in a Technical University seriously now that the conversion is over.
“Also, let us together contribute in our various small ways to make BTU the preferred choice Institution for Ghanaians who wanted technical university education, and also those in the sub regions,” he said.
Professor Abantanga advised the graduands to be law-abiding and rally their respective communities and organizations into productive ventures that would contribute to the development of those communities and the country at large.
Due to the COVD-19 restrictions, the ceremony was held virtually with only few students attending physically.
In all, 44 students had first class.
