AngloGold Ashanti donates towards Farmers’ Day

Obuasi (Ash), Nov. 30, GNA – AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine has donated items worth GHc122,120.00 to eight districts in the Ashanti Region to support this year’s National Farmers Day celebrations.

The items included eight 32-inches LED TV, eight Motorised Tricycle (Aboboyaa), 16 pairs of Wellington Boots, 96 pieces of GTP wax print, 40 boxes of Key soap, eight Knapsack sprayer, 10 machetes and eight boxes of Sunphosate Glyphosate Weedicide.

The beneficiaries are Obuasi Municipal, Obuasi East District, Adansi Asokwa, Adansi North, Adansi South, Adansi Akrofuom, Amansie West and Bekwai Municipal Assembly, which formed the operational areas of the company.

Mr Emmanuel Baidoo, the Senior Manager of Sustainability, AngloGold Ashanti, Obuasi Mine, who presented the items, said the company’s annual gesture formed part of the Agricultural Development Programme under its Social Management Plan, which was launched in 2019.

It was the company’s contribution to make agriculture attractive in its operational areas and serve as motivation to the youth to venture into farming, which was the mainstay of the Ghanaian economy.

“As a Company, which subscribes to the Sustainable Development Goal, we believe that this gesture from us will go a long way to entice the youth to commercially invest in agriculture,” he said.

The company was committed to supporting the agriculture and food production value chain as well as local initiatives that would help diversify the local economy, Mr Baidoo said.

That, he said, would be achieved through a fruitful collaboration with government and all stakeholders to improve the livelihoods of families in the host communities.

Mr Emmanuel Mensah, the Asante Bekwai Municipal Director of Agriculture, who received the items on behalf of the beneficiaries, lauded Anglogold Ashanti for the support adding that its resolve to help boost agriculture production was highly commendable and worthy of emulation.

He called on other institutions to support agriculture, which he described as the “panacea” to the country’s socio-economic challenges.

This year’s Farmers Day celebration, which is the 37th, is being held at Cape Coast on the theme: “Planting for Food and Jobs – Consolidating Food System in Ghana,” to be climaxed on December 3.
