Akuapem South to enjoy free food on farmer’s day

Aburi (E/R), Dec 3, GNA – The Akuapem South Municipal Coordinating Director, Ms Lydia Akuateh has disclosed that free foods will be provided to participants and all who will attend the 2021 farmers’ day at Pokrom in the Akuapem South Municipality.

She explained that the municipality would hold its first ever food exhibition which would enhance the promotion of various local Ghanaian foods.

Ms Akuateh told the Ghana News Agency in an interview towards the preparation of the farmers’ day in the Akuapem South Municipality that this year is an exceptional year.

She said, “there will be an exhibition of indigenous food recipes that will be prepared by the Akuapim Vocational Technical Training at Kitase”

In addition to the local dishes, local drinks and fruit juices are also going to be exhibited and served.

Ghana celebrates farmers annually on the first Friday of December to congratulate and award farmers and agricultures for their contributions towards improving the economic growth of the country.

This year’s celebration which is marked on December 3 is themed, “planting for food and jobs, consolidating food systems in Ghana.”

Contrary to the theme, the Planting for Food and Jobs (PFJ) was sluggish this year as according to a market survey done by the Ghana News Agency.

The survey revealed there were increases in the prices of fertilizer and other farm inputs which forced some farmers to either reduce the size of their farmlands or quit farming.

However some farmers prevailed over the struggle in purchasing affordable fertilizer to meet their target farm outputs.

Ms Akuateh noted that 20 awards would be presented to crops and animal farmers, agro-processors, best organized farmer-based group and farmers into aquaculture.

She said the best three farmers in the municipality will also be recognized.

“There will also be an overall best farmer, 1st and 2nd runner-ups” she said.

The government as part of its 2022 economic improvement has made plans in the 2022 budget to continue with the PFJ programme as a means to support agricultures in the country.
