2022 WCQ: Arsenal provides worrying update on Thomas Partey’s injury situation ahead of Ethiopia, South Africa games

Arsenal manager, Mikel Arteta has said he is uncertain whether Thomas Partey will recover in time to play for Ghana in the international break.

The 27-year-old midfielder has been named in Ghana’s 28-man squad for the final round of games of the 2022 Fifa World Cup qualifiers this month.

Partey was left out of Arsenal squad for their home game against Watford. According to the manager, the midfielder picked up a groin injury on Thursday at the training grounds.

Speaking in a post-match interview after the win over Claudio Ranieri’s side Arteta provided an uninspiring update on the player’s injury.

“Let’s see what happens with Thomas [Partey],” the Spaniard said.

“He wasn’t available to play today. He’s got a muscle injury, and we don’t know how it’s going to evolve, so let’s take it day by day.”

Ghana will be hosted at the Orlando Stadium in the matchday five games by Ethiopia on November 11.

Back at home, the Black Stars will host the Bafana Bafana in the final Group G games on Sunday, November 14.

Ghana need to win all two games to ensure they qualify for the playoffs. The West African country are seeking to return to the Mundial having missed out in the last edition hosted in Russia.

The injury is a major blow for Ghana who trail South Africa by a point in the Group G standings of the Africa qualifiers.

Coach Milovan Rajevac and the Ghana FA are said to be in talks with Arsenal to see if Thomas Partey could be released for the final game against South Africa.
